A careful string change begins with the right replacement and a check of the instrument.

Before you begin

Check the instrument size, string position, gauge and tailpiece fitting. Inspect the bridge, nut and peg contact points. Rough edges or damaged grooves need a luthier’s attention before fitting a new string. If this is your first change, ask a teacher or luthier to demonstrate.

Change one string at a time

Keep the other strings at pitch to help maintain bridge and soundpost support. Seat the ball or loop correctly, and wind the string neatly without overlapping turns. Follow the string maker’s fitting guidance, including any bridge protector supplied with a violin E.

Tune gradually and check the bridge

Bring the string up to its intended pitch without tuning above it. Check the bridge before, during and after tuning. If it tilts, the feet lift or the soundpost falls, stop and ask a luthier. Do not force the bridge back or attempt to reset a soundpost yourself.

A peg that is difficult to turn and a peg that will not hold need an individual assessment.

Describe the problem

Note which peg is affected, whether it sticks or slips, and when the problem started. Share these observations with your teacher or luthier rather than assuming that the string needs replacing.

Peg compound and professional help

Pirastro recommends peg compound on the surfaces where a friction peg contacts the pegbox. If turning is still difficult, it advises consulting a luthier. Ask for a demonstration before treating a peg yourself.

Avoid forcing a repair

If the peg is stuck or will not hold, stop and ask for help. Do not reshape the peg or pegbox yourself. For geared pegs, follow the instructions for that particular mechanism.

Wipe the strings after playing

Use a soft, dry cloth to remove rosin residue. Larsen recommends a dry microfibre cloth for routine violin-string care. Ask your luthier how to clean the instrument’s varnished surfaces safely.

Keep cleaners away from the varnish

Larsen warns that the instrument’s body must be protected during alcohol-based string cleaning. Follow the guidance for your exact strings; do not improvise with household solvents.

Know when to ask

If residue does not come away with gentle dry wiping, ask a specialist before trying a stronger cleaning method. Discuss storage and any change in the instrument’s condition with your teacher or luthier.

There is no single replacement interval that suits every string and player.

Listen for a change

Thomastik-Infeld recommends paying attention to changes in tone, response and intonation rather than relying only on a calendar. A string may lose its useful playing qualities before it breaks.

Consider how the strings are used

Playing hours, technique, perspiration, climate, material and the instrument all affect string life. Two players using the same set may therefore need replacements at different times.

Keep a short record

Note the fitting date, product, size and gauge, then record any changes you notice. This gives you a useful comparison with your next set. If a sudden problem appears on one string, have the setup checked as well; replacing the string does not necessarily resolve a rough groove or another contact problem.

Identify the exact option

Write down the instrument, size, string position, family and gauge. Check whether the listing is for one string, a pair or a complete set. Similar names can refer to different constructions, including standard, Soloist and Gold versions.

Viola body size is not playing length

For strings specified by vibrating length, measure from nut to bridge. Warchal explicitly distinguishes this measurement from the viola body length. Use the maker’s size guidance rather than converting a body measurement into an assumed string size.

Check ball, loop and set contents

Tailpiece fittings must match the string ending. Some E strings have removable balls; others are supplied as separate ball or loop versions. A package can also contain two E choices for one violin. Read the contents instead of assuming that every set is the same.

Compare one change at a time

Keep a note of the setup you already have and the change you want: for example, easier response on one string or a different E fitting. Descriptions such as warm or brilliant can guide a comparison, but they are not promises about your instrument.
