About Pirastro Eudoxa

The golden age of cello string tone.

Pirastro Eudoxa is revered by players who value colour, nuance, and musicality above all else. The string pairs hand-crafted gut cores with premium metal windings to create a set that is beautifully balanced from top to bottom. The result is a warm, mellow sound with rich complexity, quick bow response, and a soft feel under the fingers.

Eudoxa is one of Pirastro's longest-standing string families, trusted by generations of cellists for its authentic gut sound with a level of consistency and craftsmanship that sets it apart. For players exploring historic repertoire, seeking orchestral blend, or simply wanting to hear what their instrument sounds like at its most natural, Eudoxa is a compelling choice.

The four voices

What each string brings.

A · Gut / Aluminium · Gauge 21

Singing treble

Hand-finished sheep-gut core with aluminium winding. A singing treble with refined brilliance and lyrical clarity. Gauge 21, medium tension, ball end.

D · Gut / Aluminium · Gauge 24

Velvety midrange

Gut core with aluminium winding. A velvety middle register that blends naturally in ensemble and carries with elegance in solo playing. Gauge 24, medium tension, ball end.

G · Gut / Silver · Gauge 26.5

Round resonance

Gut core with silver winding. A round, resonant G with a focused, singing core and the complex overtones that characterise the gut aesthetic. Gauge 26.5, medium tension, ball end.

C · Gut / Silver · Gauge 35

Noble foundation

Gut core with silver winding. A dark, noble C that anchors the instrument with authority and deep, complex resonance. Gauge 35, medium tension, ball end.

Playability

Supple feel, rich colour, responsive at every bow speed.

Eudoxa strings respond readily at lower bow pressures and reward nuanced contact-point work. The gut core feels supple in the left hand, reducing fatigue across long rehearsals. The natural elasticity of gut makes string crossings smooth and bow contact sensitive to every subtle change in pressure and speed.

After the settling-in period expected of gut, Eudoxa offers reliable tuning stability and consistent articulation. The warm, mellow character suits orchestral players seeking blend, chamber musicians craving complex overtones, and soloists exploring Baroque or Romantic repertoire.

Frequently asked

Pirastro Eudoxa cello strings, in short.

How long do Eudoxa strings last?

Gut strings have a shorter lifespan than steel or synthetic. Lifespan depends heavily on playing hours, perspiration, and environmental conditions. Replace when the sound loses its warmth, shimmer, or the pitch becomes false.

How long do new Eudoxa strings take to settle in?

Allow at least 48 to 72 hours of regular playing, retuning frequently during the first day. The strings will continue to open up over the first week. Avoid dramatic changes in temperature and humidity during the settling period.

Are these genuine Pirastro strings?

Yes. Symphonia stocks Pirastro Eudoxa through the official supply chain. If a string is faulty on arrival or fails prematurely under normal use, we arrange the replacement directly.

How does Eudoxa compare to Oliv?

Both Eudoxa and Oliv are Pirastro gut strings with aluminium-wound A and D, and silver-wound G and C. Eudoxa uses lighter gauges overall and is generally considered to have a slightly more accessible feel and a warmer, mellower voice. Oliv uses heavier gauges and is known for a richer, more complex, and projecting sound. Both are professional-grade gut strings from the same manufacturer.
