SHOP THE SETAbout Opal
Handmade strings, consistent response.
Opal is a string manufacturer focused on handmade synthetic-core construction. The Titan range pairs titanium windings on the upper strings with copper-silver on the lower strings, giving a consistent tonal character across the full set: focused at the top, warm and centred below.
Symphonia is the authorised Opal dealer in New Zealand. Every Opal string sold here comes direct from the official supply chain with manufacturer-backed warranty. If a string is faulty on arrival or fails prematurely under normal use, contact us and we will arrange a remedy.
The four strings
Each voice, in detail.
E · Composite Titanium
Focused, stable top
Steel core with titanium winding. Ball-end. Delivers a clear, stable upper register without excessive brightness, and holds pitch firmly under full bow pressure.
A · Titanium on Nylon
Clear, responsive upper voice
Nylon core with titanium winding. Matches the focused character of the E string and transitions smoothly through the upper positions without tonal gap.
D · Copper-Silver on Nylon
Warm, centred middle
Nylon core with copper-silver winding. The D sits at the tonal centre of the set, carrying warmth and body that balances against the brighter upper strings.
G · Copper-Silver on Nylon
Deep, resonant foundation
Nylon core with copper-silver winding. Broad and resonant in the low register, with a depth that gives the full set its tonal balance and weight.
Playability
Even tension, consistent bow response.
Handmade construction gives each Opal Titan string even tension across its length, which supports stable intonation and consistent bow response from the heel to the tip. The synthetic core settles more quickly than gut, and the tonal character stays reliable across long rehearsals and humidity changes.
The tension profile is moderate. The titanium upper strings are responsive without being brittle, and the copper-silver lower strings accept varied bow weight without losing focus. The overall character suits orchestral and chamber playing where blend and intonation matter as much as projection.

Frequently asked
Opal Titan violin strings, in short.
How long do Opal Titan strings last?
Under regular playing the tone stays consistent for several months. Replace when the sound becomes dull or intonation becomes harder to maintain. Wipe rosin off after each session to extend lifespan.
How long do new strings take to settle in?
Allow 24 to 48 hours of normal playing for pitch to stabilise. The synthetic core settles relatively quickly compared to gut. Retune gently in small increments during the settling period.
Are these genuine Opal strings?
Yes. Symphonia is Opal's authorised dealer in New Zealand. Every string comes direct from the official supply chain with manufacturer-backed warranty. If a string is faulty on arrival or fails prematurely under normal use, contact us and we will arrange a remedy.
What is special about the Opal Titan range?
The Titan range uses titanium winding on the E and A strings for a focused, stable top register, paired with copper-silver winding on the D and G for warmth and depth. The combination gives a consistent tonal character across the full set without the brightness of an all-steel setup.
Can I return an opened string packet?
No. Strings cannot be returned once the packet has been opened, for hygiene and tension reasons.
