About Peter Infeld

A brilliant, focused voice with depth.

Peter Infeld is Thomastik-Infeld's synthetic-core line for cello, voiced as warm-brilliant rather than pure-bright. The set is prized for strong articulation, fast bow response, and a projecting top end that keeps a clearly defined centre, balanced by a tungsten-wound lower register that adds warmth and weight without losing focus.

The A and D use a synthetic multi-strand core for fast, even response and a singing, focused upper register. The G and C are tungsten-wound for density, depth, and projection, giving the lower register the carrying power soloists need without darkening into mud.

String-by-string

Four voices, individually tuned.

String 1 · A

Peter Infeld A

Synthetic multi-strand core. Brilliant and focused with a singing top that projects cleanly, fast bow response, and strong articulation through long phrases. The defining voice of the Peter Infeld sound.

String 2 · D

Peter Infeld D

Synthetic multi-strand core. Warm-brilliant middle voice that bridges the A's projection and the lower strings' density. Even response under the bow, with depth that prevents brightness from tipping into glare.

String 3 · G

Peter Infeld G

Tungsten-wound for density and focused projection. Warm, articulate low-middle voice that carries through a hall with the response speed Peter Infeld is known for.

String 4 · C

Peter Infeld C

Tungsten-wound for grounded depth and projection. A defined, warm bass with the carrying power soloists rely on, holding focus under bow pressure rather than collapsing into mud.

Who it suits

Made for cellists who want projection with warmth.

Peter Infeld suits advanced students, professionals, and soloists who want a string that projects strongly without going thin or glassy. If you play with a forward bow and want strong articulation on the A and D paired with a warm, tungsten-grounded G and C, Peter Infeld is the Thomastik-Infeld voicing built for that.

If you want a brighter, more soloist-forward voice with ringing overtones, Larsen Sovereign is the alternative. If you want maximum warmth and complexity with a darker centre, look at the warmer end of the catalogue.

Frequently asked

Peter Infeld cello strings, in short.

How does Peter Infeld compare to Larsen Sovereign?

Both are synthetic-core soloist strings. Sovereign is voiced at the bright, brilliant end, with high-clarity attack and ringing overtones. Peter Infeld is warm-brilliant: still projecting and articulate, but with more depth and warmth in the centre of the tone, particularly through the G and C.

What tension does Peter Infeld come in?

The standard Peter Infeld voicing is medium tension across all four strings. This is what we stock — if you need an alternative gauge, email and we will confirm availability from Thomastik-Infeld direct.

How long do Peter Infeld strings last?

Lifespan depends on playing hours, perspiration, and climate. A daily-playing professional or advanced student should expect several months of consistent tone. Replace when the sound becomes dull, unfocused, or false in the upper positions.

How long do new Peter Infeld strings take to settle in?

Allow 24 to 72 hours of normal playing for the strings to settle. Retune gently in small increments and wipe rosin residue off after each session. Avoid sudden temperature changes where possible.

Are these genuine Thomastik-Infeld strings?

Yes. Symphonia stocks Peter Infeld through the official Thomastik-Infeld supply chain. If a string is faulty on arrival or fails prematurely under normal use, we will arrange a replacement in line with the manufacturer's warranty.
