Strings, tuning and intonation

Separate two questions: does the open string hold its pitch, and are stopped notes consistently in tune? Buying a more expensive string is not a substitute for identifying the problem.

What to check first

Note whether the issue began after a string change, affects one string, or appears throughout the instrument. Check the string’s condition and the behaviour of the pegs. If the cause is unclear, ask a teacher or luthier to help assess it.
