Thomastik-Infeld · Violin String

Dominant,
the reference standard.

First introduced in 1970 and still the world reference for violin strings. Perlon synthetic core with gut-like warmth and reliable pitch stability. Individual strings for 4/4 and 3/4 violin.

About Dominant

Over five decades as the world benchmark.

Dominant strings were first introduced in 1970 and remain the reference standard for students, teachers, and orchestral players worldwide. The Perlon synthetic core produces gut-like warmth without the tuning instability of genuine gut, delivering consistent response across all four strings with smooth string crossings and reliable intonation.

The E string includes both ball end and loop end in the same packet, making it compatible with any tailpiece fitting. Dominant is available in 4/4 and 3/4 sizes from this listing.

The four voices

E, A, D, G — each string's character.

E String

Steel, ball and loop

Steel core, tin-plated winding. Includes both ball end and loop end in the same packet. Warm and clear at the top of the register.

A String

Perlon warmth

Perlon core, aluminium winding. Warm and flexible, responsive to bow changes. The gut-like warmth that defines the Dominant character.

D String

Even and balanced

Perlon core, aluminium winding. Even tone through the middle register, warm and consistent for smooth string crossings.

G String

Full and warm

Perlon core, silver winding. Full-bodied low register with warmth and depth, grounding the set's balanced, gut-like character.

Playability

Gut-like warmth, synthetic reliability.

Dominant strings sit at the warm-to-balanced point on the tonal spectrum. The Perlon core gives gut-like warmth without the pitch instability. Consistent response across all four strings makes for smooth string crossings and reliable intonation, which is why Dominant has remained the reference standard for over five decades. Available in 4/4 and 3/4 sizes.

Frequently asked

Thomastik Dominant, in short.

What is the tonal character of Dominant strings?

Warm and balanced with gut-like warmth from the Perlon synthetic core. They sit at the warm end of the synthetic-core spectrum without being as bright as modern professional strings. Consistent response and reliable intonation make them a dependable choice for a wide range of players and instruments.

What sizes are available?

This listing covers 4/4 and 3/4 sizes. A 1/2 size set is also available. Choose the size that matches your violin. A 3/4 violin takes 3/4 strings; a 4/4 violin takes 4/4 strings.

Does the Dominant Pro replace Dominant?

No. Dominant Pro is a separate, more powerful string with a bell-like tonal character designed for modern professional performers. Classic Dominant remains in the range as the warm, balanced reference string it has been since 1970.

Are these authentic Thomastik-Infeld strings?

Yes. Symphonia stocks Thomastik-Infeld through the official supply chain. Faulty strings are replaced in line with manufacturer warranty.
