W.E. Hill and Sons Varnish Cleaner
The original Hill formula. Gently removes rosin, dirt, and grime from instrument varnish without stripping or dulling the finish. Trusted by workshops and players for over a century.
What It Is
A cleaner made specifically for instrument varnish
Most household cleaners and general polishes are too aggressive for violin and cello varnish. Instrument varnishes are thin, often oil-based, and formulated to preserve the wood's acoustic response. A cleaner that cuts too hard removes varnish along with the dirt.
Hill Varnish Cleaner was developed by W.E. Hill and Sons, one of England's most respected violin making and dealing firms. The formula is mild enough for regular use on traditional oil varnish yet effective at dissolving rosin buildup, the most common problem on the instrument top and shoulders.
Made in England. The original formula, unchanged.

Where to Use
Body and shoulders; not strings, not the bow
Use on
The top, back, ribs, and shoulders of the instrument body. These are the areas that collect rosin dust and handle oils during normal playing.
Do not use on
The strings, bow hair, bow stick, or chin rest. These surfaces require different products or no cleaning product at all.
How to Use
Small amount, soft cloth, circular motion
Apply a very small amount to a soft, lint-free cloth. A microfibre cloth is ideal. Work in gentle circular motions across the affected area. The cleaner will lift rosin and dirt. Buff lightly with a dry section of cloth to restore shine.
After each practice session, wipe the instrument down with a dry cloth to remove fresh rosin before it builds up. Use Hill Varnish Cleaner for the deeper monthly clean when rosin has accumulated on the top.
Less is more. You do not need to saturate the cloth. A small amount is more effective and less likely to leave residue.
Care + Storage
Keep it cool and sealed
Store at room temperature away from direct sunlight or heat. Cap tightly after each use. Do not leave open in a case. One bottle lasts most players years given the small amounts used per application.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it safe on all types of instrument varnish?
It is formulated for traditional oil varnish, which is standard on quality instruments. If your instrument has a spirit or lacquer finish (common on some student instruments), test a tiny area first or check with your luthier before full use.
How often should I use it?
Once or twice a month for most players. Wipe the instrument with a dry cloth after every session to remove fresh rosin, and reserve the cleaner for the accumulated buildup that a dry cloth cannot shift.
Can I use it to clean the strings or the bow stick?
No. Varnish cleaner is for the instrument body only. Strings should be wiped with a dry cloth. Bow sticks should not have liquid applied without guidance from a luthier, as it can affect the camber or the grip for the right hand.
Will it restore scratches or repair finish damage?
No. It is a cleaner, not a filler or restorative. For scratches, chips, or finish repairs, a luthier is needed. Using more cleaner on damaged areas will not help and may worsen the problem.
What cloth should I use with it?
Use a soft, lint-free cloth. A microfibre cleaning cloth is the best option as it is non-abrasive and picks up residue without leaving fibres. Avoid paper towels or rough fabric that could scratch the varnish surface.
