The cloth you should use after every session
Rosin dust settles on the instrument top and strings with every stroke of the bow. Left there, it hardens into a crust that is difficult to remove and accelerates string wear. A quick wipe after every session is the most effective maintenance step a player can take.
This microfibre cloth is woven with a fine, high-density weave that lifts rosin dust without scratching the varnish. It is soft enough for use on the instrument body, bow stick, and chinrest. Unlike general dusting cloths, it does not leave fibres or lint on strings or surfaces.

Where to Use
Safe across the whole instrument
Instrument body
Wipe the top, shoulders, and sides to remove rosin dust and finger marks after each session.
Strings
Wipe along each string from fingerboard end to tailpiece to remove rosin from the bowing surface.
Bow stick
Wipe the stick to remove rosin transferred from the hair. Do not wipe the bow hair itself.
How to Use
Wipe down before you case up
Before placing the instrument in the case at the end of every session, wipe the strings, the top of the instrument, and the bow stick. This takes about 30 seconds and prevents rosin from hardening between sessions.
Use a dry cloth for the daily wipe. When used with a cleaning product such as the Hill Varnish Cleaner, apply the product to the cloth first, then work it across the instrument. This prevents over-application and ensures even coverage.
Keep a separate cloth for strings and one for the instrument body if possible, to avoid transferring rosin from strings onto the varnish.
Care + Storage
Wash cool, air dry
Machine wash in cool or warm water. Do not use fabric softener as it clogs the fibres and reduces absorbency. Tumble dry on low or air dry. Replace when the cloth shows pilling, heavy discolouration, or reduced softness that dry-wiping cannot restore.

Can I wash it after it becomes clogged with rosin?
Yes. Machine wash in warm water, no fabric softener. The rosin will loosen and wash out. After several washes some residue may remain, but the cloth will still be effective. Replace when it no longer feels soft or when dry-wiping stops picking up rosin effectively.
Is it safe to use on instrument varnish?
Yes. Dry microfibre is the standard safe surface for instrument body wiping. It does not scratch varnish when used dry or with a small amount of a recommended cleaner. Never use it while it is saturated with cleaning product, as excess liquid on varnish can cause issues over time.
How often should I replace it?
A quality microfibre cloth with regular washing typically lasts a year or two under daily use. Replace when the weave begins to pile or when it no longer feels soft to the touch. At $9.50 it is worth keeping a spare in the case.
Can I use this cloth to apply Hill Varnish Cleaner?
Yes. Apply a small amount of cleaner to the cloth, not directly to the instrument, and work it in gently. This is the recommended pairing for monthly maintenance cleaning.
Should I keep separate cloths for different surfaces?
It is a good habit to use one cloth for strings and one for the body. String rosin that transfers onto the body cloth can leave marks on the varnish over time. Keeping two cloths in your case is cheap insurance.
