Pirastro String Oil
A light oil that extends the life of gut and synthetic strings by conditioning the winding and reducing the build-up of sweat and rosin. Applied at the fingerboard, not the bowing area. 50 ml.
What It Is
Protection for the part of the string that works hardest
The section of string between the fingerboard and the nut absorbs sweat, skin oils, and small amounts of airborne rosin. Over time this residue works into the winding, accelerating corrosion and deadening the string's response. Pirastro String Oil slows this process by creating a light protective layer on the winding that resists moisture and debris.
This is not a tone-altering product. It does not make strings sound brighter or warmer. It is purely a longevity tool that keeps strings sounding as they were when new for longer, delaying the gradual deadening that happens through normal use.
Recommended for gut strings and synthetic-core strings with metal winding, particularly in players who practice frequently or have naturally acidic perspiration.

Who Benefits
More useful for some players than others
Frequent players
If you practice two or more hours daily, string oil pays for itself in extended string life.
Gut string users
Gut strings are especially susceptible to moisture damage. String oil is part of the standard care routine for gut sets.
Players with acidic sweat
Some players corrode strings faster than average. String oil is a practical counter-measure.
How to Use
A small amount, in the right place
Apply a tiny drop of oil to a clean cloth and draw it along the string in the fingerboard area from the nut to where the finger positions end. Do not apply oil to the bowing area between the fingerboard and the bridge. Oil on the bowing surface affects the bow hair's grip on the string and will reduce tone quality significantly.
Apply once a week under heavy use or once a month with moderate use. Wipe away any excess after application. The string should feel smooth but not wet or slippery to the touch.
If oil accidentally contacts the bowing area, wipe it away immediately with a dry cloth and apply fresh rosin to the bow before playing.
Care + Storage
Room temperature, cap on
Keep the bottle capped and stored at room temperature. Do not expose to heat or direct sunlight. A 50 ml bottle lasts most players a year or more under normal use. Discard if the oil becomes cloudy or develops an odour.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will string oil change how my strings sound?
No. Applied correctly to the fingerboard zone only, it does not affect tone. What it does do is slow the degradation that dulls sound over time. Strings correctly treated with string oil should sound fresh for longer.
How often should I apply it?
Once a week for players who practice over two hours daily. Once a month is sufficient for more occasional use. No benefit from applying more frequently than needed.
What happens if oil gets onto the bowing area?
The bow hair will struggle to grip the string, producing a weak or scratchy tone. Wipe the string clean immediately and re-apply rosin to the bow. The effect is temporary once the oil is removed.
Does it work on steel core strings?
Steel core strings are less porous and less vulnerable to moisture damage than gut or synthetic core strings. String oil provides less benefit on steel core and is not usually recommended for them.
How much should I apply each time?
Very little. A single small drop on a cloth is enough for all four strings. The goal is a thin, barely visible film on the winding. More than this does not improve protection and may leave residue that attracts grit.
