Hidersine

The one most players start with.
And many never leave.

A light amber rosin for violin, medium cake, 20g. Clean traction, bright attack, and forgiving enough for a beginner while still giving an advanced player full control. Made in England.

What it is

Hidersine's standard grade.

The 3V is the medium cake of the rosin that has sat in more violin cases than almost any other. It is the same formula as the larger 1V, made to one of Francis Hider's historic recipes in England, hand-mixed and hand-poured. Its harder, lighter make-up gives good traction on the string without loading the bow with dust, which is why teachers keep recommending it and why professionals keep using it long after they could afford something else.

Sound profile

Bright, with a clear attack.

The 3V speaks quickly and cleanly at the start of the note. At GPR 4 it sits in the middle of the grip scale: enough purchase for a confident sound, light enough that the bow stays easy to move. Beginners find it forgiving because it does not grab, and advanced players keep it because it lets them shape dynamics from the quietest end of the range to the loudest. It suits temperate to warm conditions, where a softer dark rosin can become tacky.

How to use

Getting the most from it.

  • Apply with slow, even strokes along the full length of the bow hair before playing.
  • Harder rosins take longer to bite on new bow hair. Expect several coats over the first few sessions before it grips evenly.
  • A few strokes before each session is enough once the hair is coated.
  • Wipe rosin dust from the strings and the instrument top after each session.

Care and storage

Keep it in good condition.

Store in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight, and keep the cake in its box between sessions. Hard rosins are less prone to softening in heat than dark grades, but they will crack if dropped on a hard floor, so handle the cake over the case rather than over tiles. Kept sensibly, a 20g cake lasts a long time.

Questions

Common questions.

What is the difference between the 3V and the 1V?

The formula is the same. The 3V is the medium cake at 20g, the 1V is the large cake. Choose the 3V unless you want the bigger block.

Should I choose the light 3V or the dark 6V?

The 3V is lighter and harder, with a brighter attack and less grip (GPR 4). The 6V is darker and softer, with more grip and a fuller sound in the lower register (GPR 6). Light suits warmer conditions and players who want ease and clarity; dark suits cooler conditions and players who want body and traction.

Is it suitable for a beginner?

Yes. It is one of the most commonly recommended rosins for students precisely because it is forgiving, and it will not need replacing as the player improves.

Does rosin have a shelf life?

Rosin lasts for years when stored well. If the surface goes glassy and stops producing dust on the bow, scratch it lightly with a bit of sandpaper. If that does not help, replace the cake.

Can rosin cause an allergic reaction?

Rosin contains colophony, which irritates some players. Wipe rosin dust from the instrument and strings after each session to reduce exposure. For a gentler alternative, see the Mabsa Honey formula.
