Why buy as a set
Three reasons to take the whole pack.
Matched gauges
Each Eudoxa string is individually gauged. The set ensures the four gauges are paired exactly as Pirastro intends, for the optimal tonal balance across the instrument.
Better price per string
The complete set is $20 less than buying the four strings individually, at the same hand-finished Pirastro quality.
Uniform settle-in
Replacing all four gut strings at once means they settle together. Mixing fresh gut with older strings can leave the instrument tonally uneven during the break-in period.
About Pirastro Eudoxa
The golden age of cello string tone.
Pirastro Eudoxa pairs hand-crafted gut cores with premium metal windings to create a set that is beautifully balanced from top to bottom. The result is a warm, mellow sound with rich complexity, quick bow response, and a soft feel under the fingers.
Eudoxa is one of Pirastro's longest-standing string families, trusted by generations of cellists for its authentic gut sound with consistent craftsmanship. SKU 197110.
The four voices
What each string brings.
A · Gut / Aluminium · Gauge 21
Singing treble
Hand-finished sheep-gut with aluminium winding. Refined brilliance and lyrical clarity. Gauge 21, medium tension, ball end.
D · Gut / Aluminium · Gauge 24
Velvety midrange
Gut core with aluminium winding. Velvety and elegant, blending naturally and carrying with warmth. Gauge 24, medium tension, ball end.
G · Gut / Silver · Gauge 26.5
Round resonance
Gut core with silver winding. Round and resonant, with a focused, singing core and complex gut overtones. Gauge 26.5, medium tension, ball end.
C · Gut / Silver · Gauge 35
Noble foundation
Gut core with silver winding. Dark and noble, anchoring the instrument with authority and deep resonance. Gauge 35, medium tension, ball end.
Playability
Supple feel, rich colour, responsive at every bow speed.
Eudoxa strings respond readily at lower bow pressures and reward nuanced contact-point work. The gut core feels supple in the left hand, reducing fatigue across long rehearsals. After the settling-in period expected of gut, the set offers reliable tuning stability and consistent articulation.
The warm, mellow character suits orchestral players seeking blend, chamber musicians craving complex overtones, and soloists exploring historic repertoire. The tone is accessible and musical from the first session, and opens up further over the first week.

Frequently asked
Eudoxa set, in short.
What is included in the set?
The set includes all four strings: A (gauge 21), D (gauge 24), G (gauge 26.5), and C (gauge 35) in Medium tension. All ball ends, fine-tuner friendly. SKU 197110.
Why is the set cheaper than buying the strings separately?
Pirastro prices the set to encourage complete replacements with matched gauges, for optimal tonal balance and uniform settle-in.
How long do Eudoxa strings last?
Gut strings have a shorter lifespan than steel or synthetic. Lifespan depends on playing hours, perspiration, and environment. Replace when the sound loses its warmth or the pitch becomes false.
How long do new strings take to settle in?
Allow at least 48 to 72 hours of regular playing, retuning frequently. The strings continue to open up over the first week. Avoid dramatic temperature and humidity changes during this period.
Are these genuine Pirastro strings?
Yes. Symphonia stocks Pirastro Eudoxa through the official supply chain. If a string is faulty on arrival or fails prematurely under normal use, we arrange the replacement directly.
Need help choosing?
