Cavagnoli & Piccinotti,
two Cremona masters, one violin.

A 2024 violin handcrafted by Roberto Cavagnoli and Barbara Piccinotti in their Cremona workshop. Cremonese tradition refined over two careers, in a single instrument.

The instrument

A masterpiece of the Cremonese tradition.

This 2024 violin is the joint work of Roberto Cavagnoli and his wife, Barbara Piccinotti — both Cremona-trained luthiers with international competition records. Every element of the build is shaped to produce an instrument that responds quickly, projects honestly, and stays warm under hard playing.

The tone is rich and resonant with remarkable warmth, fast response, and clear projection. Harmonic depth and an expressive dynamic range make it suited to solo, chamber, and orchestral repertoire alike. Its balanced spectrum allows effortless articulation and expressive phrasing across the entire register.

Wood & varnish

Aged Italian spruce, flamed Balkan maple.

The top is aged spruce from Northeast Italy. The back, ribs, and scroll are flamed maple from the Balkans. Cavagnoli’s signature varnishing technique — a hand-applied, thin, flexible coat — lets the wood breathe and contributes to the violin’s free, open sound and quick response. It gives the instrument an antique-style finish without obscuring the grain.

About the makers

Roberto Cavagnoli & Barbara Piccinotti.

Born in 1975, Roberto Cavagnoli is a master luthier trained at the Antonio Stradivari International School of Violin Making in Cremona. He worked under respected Cremonese makers including Angelo Sperzaga and Barbara Piccinotti, and spent time in Australia with James W. Robinson refining instrument set-up. His work has been recognised internationally, including a Silver Medal for cello tone at the V.S.A. Competition in Portland and prizes at the Cremona Triennale.

Barbara Piccinotti maintains her own workshop in Cremona and has trained generations of younger makers — Cavagnoli among them. Instruments produced in their joint hand carry both makers’ imprint: clean lines, careful sound research, and traditional Cremonese voicing.
