About Opal
Handmade strings, warm and balanced.
Opal Gold is a handmade synthetic-core violin string range from For-Tune Strings. The design centres on a warm, balanced voice across all four strings: a plain steel E for clarity and pitch stability, aluminium-wound A for a warm and responsive upper-middle voice, and silver-wound D and G for depth and a centred low register.
Symphonia is the authorised Opal dealer in New Zealand. Every Opal Gold string sold here comes direct from the official supply chain with manufacturer-backed warranty. If a string is faulty on arrival or fails prematurely under normal use, contact us and we will arrange a remedy.
The four strings
Each voice, in detail.
E · Plain Steel
Clear, stable top
Plain steel core. Ball-end. Sits cleanly at the top of the set, holding pitch firmly and providing a stable upper register without harshness.
A · Aluminium on Nylon
Warm, responsive upper voice
Nylon core with aluminium winding. Warm and quick under the bow, transitioning smoothly from the E without a tonal gap between the upper strings.
D · Silver on Nylon
Centred, rounded middle
Nylon core with silver winding. Rounded and full at the tonal centre, carrying warmth and body through the middle register of the instrument.
G · Silver on Nylon
Full, projecting foundation
Nylon core with silver winding. Full in the low register with clear projection. Gives the set its depth and warmth from the bottom up.
Playability
Balanced response, warm projection.
Opal Gold strings are tensioned for balance across all four voices. Projection and warmth carry evenly from G through E, supporting consistent intonation and bow control. The nylon synthetic core settles quickly after installation and remains stable across long rehearsals and humidity changes.
The overall character suits players who want a settled, vocal tone. The set pairs well with instruments that already lean bright, and gives orchestral and chamber players the blend they need without losing presence in the ensemble.

Frequently asked
Opal Gold violin set, in short.
What is included in the Opal Gold violin set?
The set includes all four strings for a 4/4 violin: E, A, D, and G, one of each. The E is plain steel, the A is aluminium-wound on a nylon core, and the D and G are silver-wound on a nylon core.
How is Opal Gold different from Opal Titan?
Opal Gold uses a plain steel E and aluminium or silver windings, giving a warm, balanced voice. Opal Titan uses titanium windings on the E and A for a more focused top register, with copper-silver windings on the D and G.
How long do Opal Gold strings last?
Several months under regular playing. Replace when the sound becomes dull or intonation becomes harder to maintain. Wipe rosin off after each session to extend lifespan.
How long do new strings take to settle in?
Allow 24 to 48 hours of normal playing for pitch to stabilise. Tune up gently in small increments during the settling period.
Are these genuine Opal strings?
