Set value
Save $20, plus the matched response of a complete pack
Why buy as a set
Three reasons to take the whole pack.
Tonal coherence
All four strings are voiced together by Opal. You get a matched response from C through A without mixing brands or experimenting with combinations.
Better price per string
Buying as a set saves $20 versus the four individual strings, and removes the inventory friction of ordering one string at a time.
Ready out of the package
Opal Gold has a short break-in window (24 to 72 hours) and ships pre-balanced for tension, so the set is performance-ready almost immediately.
About Opal Gold
Engineered to eliminate mix-and-match.
Opal Gold is a contemporary cello string range developed so that all four strings share the same response profile out of the package. Where many cellists assemble a working set from three or four different brands to balance warmth, brilliance, and projection, Opal Gold is built around a single design philosophy: warm, overtone-rich colour with the clarity, projection, and tuning stability of steel.
The strings deliver fast reaction, clear articulation, and powerful volume from the first bow stroke. Symphonia is the authorised Opal dealer in New Zealand, so every set sold here comes direct from the official supply chain with manufacturer-backed warranty.
The four voices
What each string brings.
A · Steel / Alloy
Singing top
Steel core with alloy windings. A clear, focused upper register that speaks immediately and settles quickly under the bow.
D · Steel / Alloy
Articulate middle
Matched steel/alloy construction with the A. The D carries the same fast response and brightness for a seamless transition between the top two strings.
G · Twin X-core / Tungsten
Supple resonance
Steel twin X-core wound with tungsten. The opposing-wrap construction makes the G feel pliable under the fingers while delivering a deep, resonant tone.
C · Twin X-core / Tungsten
Projecting bottom
Twin X-core with tungsten winding. Accepts substantial bow weight without choking, with focused projection in the lowest register.
Playability
Fast response, wide dynamic range, stable tuning.
Opal Gold is voiced for serious orchestral, chamber, and solo playing. The lower strings accept substantial bow weight without choking, while the upper strings sing cleanly in high positions. The tonal palette is broad enough to cover Baroque clarity, Romantic warmth, and contemporary edge in the same week.
Tuning stability is consistent across long rehearsals and concert sessions, with minimal pitch drift even under temperature and humidity change.

Frequently asked
Opal Gold cello set, in short.
What is included in the Opal Gold cello set?
The set includes all four strings for a 4/4 cello: A, D, G, and C, one of each. The A and D are steel-core with alloy windings; the G and C use Opal's twin X-core construction wound with tungsten.
Why is the set cheaper than buying the four singles?
The set is $560 versus $580 for the four singles totalled together, so you save $20 plus the convenience of a single order. The bigger reason most cellists buy as a set is tonal balance: all four strings are voiced together, so the response is matched from C through A.
How long do Opal Gold strings last?
Lifespan depends on playing hours, perspiration, and climate. A daily-playing advanced student or professional should expect several months of consistent tone from a set. Replace when the sound becomes dull, unfocused, or false in the upper positions.
How long do new Opal Gold strings take to settle in?
Allow 24 to 72 hours of normal playing for the strings to settle. Retune gently in small increments and wipe rosin residue off after each session.
Are these genuine Opal product?
Yes. Symphonia is Opal's authorised dealer in New Zealand. Every set comes direct from the official supply chain with manufacturer-backed warranty. If a string is faulty on arrival or fails prematurely under normal use, we arrange the replacement directly.
