Malcolm Collins is among the most prolific contemporary professional violin makers working in New Zealand. He trained with Ian Sweetman before developing a personal style of his own — hallmarked by crisply-cut edges in the French Stradivari manner, and a subtly coloured oil varnish that brings out the wood without dominating it.

This 1983 viola is built on the 16-inch body size — a comfortable standard for most adult players — with the clean edgework and oil varnish that distinguish Collins’s work. As a working New Zealand instrument with four decades of life behind it, it comes already settled rather than waiting to be played in.
