W.E. Hill & Son Violin Rosin – Light
W.E. Hill and Son
Clean clarity, bright tone.
The light grade from Hill.
Small light rosin on cloth with elastic loop tie, 20g. The lighter of Hill's two grades, giving a cleaner bow response and a brighter, more transparent sound.
What it is
England's lighter rosin, for clarity and control.
W.E. Hill and Son Light is the brighter of the two Hill violin rosins. A small round cake on cloth with an elastic loop tie, 20g. It produces less grip than the Dark grade, which translates into a cleaner, faster bow response with a more transparent sound. Players who favour control and clarity over body and warmth, soloists who want the string to speak quickly and cleanly, and players in warmer climates where a lighter grip is needed will find the Light grade serves them well.

Sound profile
Bright, clean, and responsive.
Hill Light produces a bright, transparent tone with a clean bow-string contact. The lower traction gives the bow more freedom, which suits fast passage work, light spiccato, and any playing style where the bow needs to respond quickly without dragging. It is the choice for soloists and players who want the string to speak immediately and cleanly without additional warmth or weight in the sound.
How to use
Getting the most from it.
- Apply with slow, even strokes along the full length of the bow hair before playing.
- Light rosin deposits more slowly than dark. You may need a few more strokes than with darker grades to achieve even coverage.
- New bow hair benefits from several coats across the first few sessions to build a foundation layer.
- Wipe rosin dust from strings and the instrument top after each session.
Care and storage
Keep it in good condition.
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. The cloth and elastic tie keep the cake protected between sessions. Light rosins are harder than dark grades and hold their shape well, but sharp knocks can still crack the cake. Keep the tie secured around the cloth when not in use.
Questions
Common questions.
What is the difference between Hill Light and Hill Dark?
Light gives a cleaner, brighter contact and suits players who want less traction and faster bow response. Dark gives more grip and a fuller, warmer sound. Both are small round cakes at 20g. Choose Light for clarity and control; choose Dark for body and warmth.
How often should I apply rosin?
Light rosin deposits more slowly than dark, so you may need slightly more strokes before each session to get even coverage. A few strokes is still the starting point; add more only if the bow feels unresponsive.
Does rosin have a shelf life?
Rosin lasts for years when stored well. Light rosins are harder than dark grades and tend to be more durable. If the cake becomes glassy or produces no dust on the bow, it is time to replace it.
Can rosin cause allergic reactions?
Most rosin contains colophony, which can irritate some players. Wipe rosin dust from the instrument after each session to minimise exposure. For a gentler alternative, see the Mabsa Honey formula.
