W.E. Hill & Son Violin Rosin – Dark

W.E. Hill and Son

Deep grip, rich bass.
The dark grade from Hill.

Small dark rosin on cloth with elastic loop tie, 20g. The darker of Hill's two grades, giving a richer grip and fuller sound in the lower register.

What it is

A century of English rosin-making.

W.E. Hill and Son has been making rosin in England for well over a hundred years. The Dark grade is the richer of their two violin rosins: a small, round cake on cloth with an elastic loop tie, 20g in weight. It produces more grip than the Light grade, with a fuller presence in the lower registers. Players who prefer a sound with body and depth, or who play in conditions where the bow needs more purchase on the string, will find the Dark grade meets that need directly.

Sound profile

Rich, full, and warm.

Hill Dark produces a rich, full tone with good grip and a warm presence in the lower strings. It has more body than the Light grade without being harsh or over-gripping. It suits players who want a darker, more resonant sound, chamber players who value depth of tone in the lower register, and anyone playing in cooler conditions where a lower-traction rosin would leave the bow feeling slippery.

How to use

Getting the most from it.

  • Apply with slow, even strokes along the full length of the bow hair before playing.
  • Dark rosin deposits more quickly than light rosin. Use a lighter hand than you might with a harder formula.
  • New bow hair needs several coats across the first few sessions before it grips evenly.
  • Wipe rosin dust from strings and the instrument top after each session.

Care and storage

Keep it in good condition.

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. The cloth wrap and elastic tie keep the cake protected; make sure the tie is back in place before storing. Dark rosins are slightly more susceptible to softening in heat than light rosins, so avoid leaving it in a warm car or case in direct sun.

Questions

Common questions.

What is the difference between Hill Dark and Hill Light?

Dark gives more grip and a fuller, warmer sound. Light gives a cleaner, brighter contact and suits players who prefer less traction. Both are small round cakes at 20g. Choose Dark if you want more body; choose Light if you want more clarity and ease of bow control.

How often should I apply rosin?

A few light strokes before each session. Dark rosin deposits more readily than light grades, so err on the lighter side to avoid over-application, which produces a heavy, sticky bow response.

Does rosin have a shelf life?

Rosin lasts for years when stored well. If the cake becomes glassy or produces no dust on the bow, it is time to replace it. The 20g size of Hill rosin means it lasts a long time with regular use.

Can rosin cause allergic reactions?

Most rosin contains colophony, which can irritate some players. Wipe rosin dust from the instrument after each session to minimise exposure. For a gentler alternative, see the Mabsa Honey formula.
